Public/Private Partnership to Support Homeland Security and Disaster Response Missions
Duluth, Ga. - May 2, 2006 - DataPath, Inc., a global solution provider for mission-critical communications, today announced that the Office of Homeland Security - Georgia Emergency Management Agency (OHS-GEMA) will deploy the DataPath 3450 Portable Command Post(TM) to strengthen its mobile command and control capabilities in the event of a disaster. OHS-GEMA will present the satellite communications solution at the 2006 Governor's Emergency Management Conference in Savannah, Georgia on Wednesday, May 3, 2006.
When disaster strikes, damage to terrestrial telecommunications infrastructure can be severe and emergency resources within the community can be overwhelmed. DataPath's solutions allow emergency first responders to restore communications networks so they can connect, communicate and coordinate during a disaster. Overcoming a significant challenge to effective emergency management, the DataPath 3450 creates interoperability between communications equipment that typically has not been designed to allow various military and civilian responders to talk to each other.
"We are dedicated to helping civilian government agencies build the communications capabilities that are crucial for coordinated, rapid response to disasters," said Andy Mullins, CEO of DataPath. "By implementing the DataPath 3450, GEMA puts Georgia on the forefront of emergency readiness. We look forward to continuing to work with both GEMA and other state emergency management officials to help further enhance homeland security."
DataPath's ability to quickly deploy communications networks during large-scale relief operations will support GEMA's proactive efforts to save lives in an emergency and make communities safer.
After Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast last year, federal and military officials requested that DataPath deploy satellite earth terminals to several sites in the region. DataPath delivered the terminals and they were quickly operational in support of U.S. Army National Guard units as well as national, state and local civilian officials responsible for coordinating disaster response.
The DataPath 3450 enables first responders in police, fire, rescue and military organizations to establish voice, video and data connectivity via satellite - from any location - in less than 30 minutes, directly linking them to a regional or national command center. With comprehensive communications capabilities such as IP telephony, video teleconferencing, radio interoperability and access to planning and response software applications, officials can quickly and easily deploy a fully-functional field command and control center on short notice.
DataPath and OHS-GEMA have worked with the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) to integrate advanced geographic location and collaboration tools into the DataPath 3450.
About the Office of Homeland Security - Georgia Emergency Management Agency
As part of the office of the governor, the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) operates under the authority of the Emergency Management Act of 1981. Virtually all GEMA employees are on 24-hour call to assist local authorities in responding to emergencies. In addition, they staff the State Operations Center (SOC) when an emergency threatens, as well as prior to, and during large-scale events. When the SOC is activated, it is staffed not only by GEMA, but also by representatives of more than a dozen other organizations with responsibility for disaster response efforts, including state and federal agencies, volunteer and private sector organizations.
