U.S. Government Award Recognizes Technology Innovation for DataPath's Efforts to Restore Vital Communications in the Aftermath of Hurricane Katrina
Duluth, Ga. - June 19, 2006 - DataPath, Inc., a global solution provider for mission-critical communications, today announced it has won the prestigious Sixth Annual Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA) International Golden Link Award. The award, which recognizes excellence and innovation in the application of technology in government operations, honors DataPath and the Army Communications-Electronics Life Cycle Management Command's (C-E LCMC) Special Projects and Homeland Security Office for the restoration of communications capabilities that supported relief efforts in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.
At the request of U.S. Northern Command's (USNORTHCOM) Joint Task Force-Katrina (JTF-Katrina), the Army C-E LCMC was called on to restore basic communications infrastructure at strategic points in the region by implementing a DataPath satellite communications network.
Within 24 hours of the storms passing, DataPath was prepared to deploy an expert team of 14 field engineers and a unique network of trailer-based DataPath ET 3000 Portables(TM), referred to as Satellite Communications Transportable Terminals (STTs) by the Army, to provide communications to the Gulf region.
"After Katrina, the lack of communications infrastructure in the Gulf clearly necessitated the use of satellite earth terminals," said Jeremy Brady, operations manager with the Special Projects and Homeland Security Office. "The power to effectively communicate and coordinate operations cannot be overstated. Throughout our deployment to Mississippi and Louisiana, we relied on DataPath's mobile communications infrastructure to support rescue and recovery operations."
DataPath's satellite communications network empowered local, state and federal first responders to carry out their search and recovery missions by restoring vital communications required for situational awareness and rescue coordination.
DataPath 3000s are rugged, highly mobile satellite earth terminals that use commercial satellites to supply reliable Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) capability, videoconferencing and military communications network access. The terminals are used extensively by the U.S. Army and Marines in Iraq and Afghanistan, and have been adapted for emergency event management in a solution called the DataPath 3450 Portable Command Post(TM). This year, the Georgia Emergency Management Agency adopted the DataPath 3450 to improve its emergency preparedness and ability to support interoperable communications.
"We are honored to receive this award for quickly establishing communications networks in support of relief efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina," said Chuck Shellhouse, general manager of DataPath's Integrated Logistics Support business unit. "I am proud of the responsiveness, ingenuity and dedication shown by our employees while delivering an emergency communications solution where it was needed most. We have a great partnership with the Army for its communications needs, and we are always prepared to go the extra mile to support its missions."
AFCEA also recognized this year two other organizations in the international and homeland security categories for the Golden Link honors. DataPath's award-winning solution will be on display at the DataPath booth (#212) at TechNet International, which will be held at the Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C. on June 19-20, 2006.
